About Kaffir Lime (Citrus Hystrix):
Citrus hystrix, commonly known as Kaffir Lime, Makrut Lime, Thai Lime, or Mauritius Papeda, is a unique citrus plant native to Southeast Asia and southern China. Its aromatic leaves and fruit are widely used in Thai, Indonesian, and other Southeast Asian cuisines, while its essential oil is prized in perfumery.
The doubled leaves of the Kaffir Lime tree have a distinctive appearance and emit an intense citrus fragrance when crushed. While fresh leaves can sometimes be found in Asian markets, growing your own ensures a steady supply of this flavorful ingredient.
Plant Care Instructions: 🌱
✅ Indoor Placement: Keep near a sunny window, especially in winter. Maintain a 2-3 inch distance from window glass to avoid cold stress.
✅ Supplemental Light: If natural sunlight is limited, place an LED daylight lamp 6-7 inches above the plant during winter.
✅ Soil & Potting Mix: Use a potting mix rather than pure compost. A mix of half compost and half sandy soil is ideal to prevent root damage.
✅ Watering: Do not overwater! Allow the topsoil to dry before watering. Avoid watering at night or on cloudy days.
⚠️ Winter Care: Water no more than twice a week during winter to prevent overwatering, which can kill the plant.
✅ Pot Size & Drainage: Use a medium-sized pot with proper drainage to avoid water accumulation at the bottom.
